On June 6, 1953, brothers Larry and Jack Mitchell opened Mitchell's Ice Cream at San Jose Avenue and 29th Street in San Francisco.  Larry and Jack were no strangers to the dairy business, as the family owned and operated a small dairy farm in San Francisco in the late 1800's.

Our store began as a neighborhood ice cream shop, but it wasn't long before restaurants and cafes began requesting our ice cream and sorbets for their menus.  Over the years, we've gained renown not only for manufacturing super premium gourmet ice cream, but also for making exotic tropical flavors.

We import avocado, buko (baby coconut), guava,
langka (jackfruit), macapuno (sweet coconut),

mango, pineapple and ube (purple yam) fruit from the Philippines for our ice cream, and we use fruit such as lychee and passion fruit for our delicious sorbets.

In addition to exotic flavors, we also offer more traditional fare, all beginning with a 16% butterfat base.  Our ice cream is made fresh in our shop daily, and we use only the finest ingredients available.  Our Vanilla ice cream is made with pure Bourbon Vanilla and only authentic Kahlua, Bailey's Irish Cream and Rum are used in the flavors bearing their names.

Mitchell's is still owned and operated by the Mitchell family today.  Because of our dedication to creating the very best ice cream, we were voted  "Best Ice Cream Parlor" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian from 1996 through 2004, "Best Ice Cream" by the San Francisco Weekly from 2001 through 2004, and "Best Ice Cream" by CitySearch.com in 2001, 2002 and 2004.  We have won over 50 gold, silver and bronze ribbons, as well as 2 gold medallions at California State Fairs.
We were also featured on Travel Magazine's "Ice Cream Palaces" show in 2004 and on the Food Network's "Roker On The Road" show in 2003.

We take pride in knowing that our ice cream has received so many awards for excellence over the years.  For a wonderfully sweet and delicious indulgence, stop by our store and try our authentic gourmet ice cream.  We've got something for everyone!
